Natural Mascara Application 101: Clump-Free Lashes Made Easy

Trying a natural mascara for the first time? You may think achieving your desired lash look will be noticeably different...

Mastering a lash look with natural mascara shouldn't be noticeably different from using a more conventional formulation. But if you are trying one for the first time a few tips we have mastered over the years help get the results you are used to.

Even though they may not contain the smoothing silicones that conventional formulas are loaded with, you can still achieve your desired look - whether it be adding volume, creating feathery lashes or a more precise defined look. In this comprehensive natural mascara application guide, we'll delve into a few prep steps, that can enhance wear and application. From the brush types optimised for even coating to the critical mistakes that can leave you with brittle, flakey lash look, consider this your master course in clump-free lashes using natural mascaras.

Prep The Lashes Ready For Natural Mascara

Whether a green beauty novice or seasoned natural makeup aficionado, these insights will streamline your mascara application for no more clumps, no more mess - just fresh, separated lashes you can bat with confidence. Let's get started!

  • Prep Your Lashes - Whether you are starting from no make-up or reapplying throughout the day, giving your lashes a comb through with a clean brush or  spoolie removes any clumps or mascara residue. This gives you a fresh base to work with. Try the Lily Lolo Dual Ended Brow Brush which has a spoolie ideal for using on lashes at one end.
  • Curl Your Lashes - Use an eyelash curler to curl and lift your lashes before applying mascara. This helps your lashes look longer and eyes more wide awake. Be sure to get the curler as close to the lash line as possible without pinching your eyelid. We like this Eyelash Curler.
  • Prime The Lashes - Since most natural mascaras are silicone-free, using a lash primer can help the formula glide on smoothly and adhere to the lashes. Don't have a primer? Simply use a bit of clear eyelash/brow tint as your base. Try the clear Ere Perez Lash & Brow Gel Mascara.
  • Use the Right Brush - The brush makes a big difference for even application and achieving the desired end result. To see which brush you should choose read our blog post on natural mascara brush types here.

How To Apply Natural Mascara For The Best Results

  • Wiggle the Wand - Don't just sweep the mascara wand through your lashes in one stroke. Use a zigzag or side-to-side wiggling motion to evenly coat each lash from the roots to the tips.
  • Work in Sections - Apply mascara to your outer lashes first, then move inward, coating the inner corner lashes last. This prevents "spider lash" clumps on the inner corners.
  • Comb Through - Use a clean lash comb or disposable mascara wand to gently comb through lashes after applying mascara to remove any clumps and separate each lash.
  • Layer Carefully - If you want thicker, more dramatic lashes, let the first coat dry completely before attempting a second coat. This prevents the mascara from becoming a clumpy mess. Some silicone-free mascaras can become brittle if over-layered, stick to just 1-2 coats max.
  • Seal the Deal - For extra hold and lash-curling power, finish by gently rolling your eyelash curler over your mascara-coated lashes one more time.
  • Finish with Gloss - A drop of clear brow gloss or mascara can add final smoothness and shine after your last coat dries.
  • Be Patient - Don't rush the process. Take your time coating each individual lash for a flawless, feathery finish.

Some of these tips will be second nature if you are a seasoned mascara wearer but if you are new to our natural mascaras a brush-up on application tips can ensure you get maximum wear and minimal flaking and clumping! With a little practice you'll be a mascara application master in no time.
